Should I choose a Template or go with a Custom Design for my WordPress Site.
Picking the right web designer is a big decision. After defining your needs and your budget, there comes the time when you have to choose between a template design and a custom design. So what is the difference?
“I can see a lot of templates available online and they are cheap!”
Opting for a predesigned template will allow you to save a lot of money as the layout, the colours, the fonts are typically predefined for you. If you know exactly what you want and find the right template for it, you will be able to launch a new website at a lower cost. However, this option has some downfalls.
First, and this is an often-overlooked point, you must consider, do you have an existing site or content that you will be used as a source for the new site? That content needs to fit the template you choose, or you will end up spending a lot of time reworking content or modifying the template. A custom design, by contrast, can be built around your content.
Second, if you choose, template chances are that you will not be the only one using that template! Even though those templates can be personalized, the changes you can easily make will be limited, and your website will not necessarily stand out from the crowd.
If adding more functionalities will be needed, there is no guarantee that they will be compatible with your template. Instead of improving your website, you could just as easily break it (which could cost you additional money to fix). Sometimes people try to combine multiple templates, but this usually is a bad idea as the CSS, themes, responsiveness and other elements are different. Trying to wrestle multiple templates into a nice single working version is a bad idea.
Lastly, sometimes WordPress updates break a template, this can also add to the overall cost of a website. However, If your needs are simple and you do not want to invest too much money and effort in the visual aspect of your site, this solution can be right for you.
“I want this design… BUT…”
Web designers will ask you to find an example of designs/templates that you like or dislike. Often, you will like layout #1 & 2, but you will struggle to choose one over the other. There are things that you don’t like on design#1 and prefer the way it has been done on design#2 and vice versa. If you don’t want to choose you can have a designer mix and match them up and voila!
First, even if the costs involved will be higher than a template theme, your website will be unique!
Second, since the design has not been bought off the shelf, it will most likely be compatible with any functionality you would like to add in the future, and flexible enough to adjust things over time. This also solves the problem of the WordPress update breaking your pre-bought theme saving you money over time.
Not satisfied with the idea of getting a template design? Then opt for a custom design!
